Joshua S. Benner, PharmD, ScD  |  Principal

Joshua S. Benner, PharmD, ScD, is a Principal at ValueMedics Research, LLC, a healthcare research and consulting firm in Falls Church, Virginia. His primary responsibility is leadership of the company’s scientific and analytic services. These capabilities include the design and analysis of prospective trials, retrospective studies in administrative and medical records databases, primary data collection through patient surveys or chart abstractions, and economic modeling.

Dr. Benner has been an investigator on numerous studies of pharmaceutical products and services, including burden of illness studies, cost-effectiveness analyses, budget impact models, quality of life assessments, policy/program evaluations, surveys of patients and providers, and more.

His work in the area of patient compliance has won numerous awards, and he is frequently invited to speak on the topics of patterns and predictors of patient compliance, the clinical and economic outcomes of noncompliance, and the development of compliance-enhancing interventions. He has also worked extensively in the therapeutic areas of dyslipidemia, Parkinson’s disease, hypertension, and HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Benner’s work has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Controlled Clinical Trials, Journal of General Internal Medicine, Pharmacoeconomics, Pharmacoepidemiology & Drug Safety, and other peer-reviewed journals. He is a member of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy, the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research, the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology, and the Society for Medical Decision Making.

Prior to joining ValueMedics, Dr. Benner was an AHRQ Post-doctoral Fellow in Health Services Research at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and The Center for Risk Analysis, Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Benner received his doctor of pharmacy degree from Drake University and his master’s and doctoral degrees in health policy and management from the Harvard University School of Public Health.
